Choose a suitable site and warehouse
  (1) StorageSteel pipesThe site or warehouse for storing steel pipes should be chosen in a clean and tidy place with good drainage, away from factories that produce harmful gases or dust. We should clear weeds and all debris on the site to keep it clean.Steel pipesClean
  (2) In the warehouse, do not store together with materials that are corrosive, such as acids, alkalis, salts, and cement.Steel pipesDifferent varieties of materials should be stored separately to prevent confusion and contact corrosion.Steel pipes(3) Large steel sections, rails, steel plates, large diameter forgings, etc., can be stored outdoors.
  (4) Medium and small steel sections, coils, rebar, medium diameter wires and ropes can be stored in well-ventilated sheds but must be covered on top and supported underneath.Steel pipes(5) Some small items like thin steel plates, steel strips, silicon steel sheets, small diameter or thin-walled products, various cold-rolled or cold-drawn items as well as high-priced and easily corrodible metal products can be stored indoors.
  (6) The warehouse should be selected based on geographical conditions. Generally, a common closed warehouse is used; that is to say it has a roof with walls and tightly sealed doors and windows along with ventilation facilities.Steel pipes(7) The warehouse requires attention to ventilation on sunny days and moisture prevention on rainy days to maintain a suitable storage environment regularly.
  2. Reasonable stacking and first-in-first-outSteel pipes(1) The principle of stacking requires that under stable stacking conditions ensuring safety, materials should be stacked by variety and specification. Different varieties of materials must be stacked separately to prevent confusion and mutual corrosion.Steel pipes(2) It is prohibited to store corrosive items near the stacking area.Steel pipes(3) The bottom of the stack should be elevated, solid, and flat to prevent materials from getting damp or deformed.
  (4) Materials of the same type should be stacked according to their entry into the warehouse for easy implementation of the first-in-first-out principle.
  (5) For outdoor-stacked steel sections, there must be wooden pads or stone strips underneath; the surface of the stack should have a slight slope for drainage while ensuring that materials are placed straight to prevent bending deformation.
  (6) The height of stacks for manual operations should not exceed 1.2m; for mechanical operations it should not exceed 1.5m; stack width should not exceed 2.5m.
  (7) There should be certain aisles between stacks; generally an inspection aisle is about O.5m wide while access aisles depend on material size and transport machinery but are generally about 1.5–2.Om wide.
  (8) The bottom of stacks must be elevated; if the warehouse has a sunlit cement floor it can be elevated by O.1m; if it's dirt ground it needs an elevation of O.2–0.5m. If it's an outdoor area with cement ground elevate by O·3–O·5m; sandy soil needs an elevation of O.5–O·7m.Steel pipes(9) Outdoor-stacked angle steels and channel steels should lie flat with openings facing downwards while I-beams should stand upright; I-beam surfaces cannot face upwards to avoid rusting due to water accumulation.
  3. Protecting material packaging and protective layers: The anti-corrosive agents or other coatings applied before leaving the factory are important measures against material rusting; care must be taken during transportation loading/unloading processes not to damage them which can extend storage life for materials.
  4. Keep warehouses clean and strengthen material maintenance
  (1) Before entering storage materials must avoid rain exposure or contamination with impurities; different methods must apply for cleaning already wet or contaminated materials based on their properties—for high hardness use wire brushes while low hardness ones use cloths or cotton etc.
  (2) After entering storage regularly check materials; if rust occurs remove rust layers promptly.
  (3) Generally after cleaning surfaces do not need oiling but high-quality steels alloy thin plates thin-walled pipes alloys etc., after derusting both inner & outer surfaces need anti-rust oil before storage.
  (4) For severely rusted items after derusting they shouldn't remain in storage long-term but used as soon as possible.
